We have a duty to provide animals in our care with those needs, \u2013 food and water, shelter, the opportunity to behave normally, careful handling, and good health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-gray-background-color has-background\">Under the Animal Welfare Act 1999, research and teaching involving manipulating live animals may require ethics approval. This requirement also applies to animals used in schools and school activities. The Schools Animal Ethics Committee was set up in 2005 to help schools, home schools and early childhood centres meet those legal requirements. <a href=\"http:\/\/animalethics.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2024-2029-New-Zealand-Association-of-Science-Educators-CEC-Approved-amended-05Aug2025.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/animalethics.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2024-2029-New-Zealand-Association-of-Science-Educators-CEC-Approved-amended-05Aug2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View the NZASE Code of Conduct for the use of animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all school projects involving animals require ethical approval from the Committee.
